Where and When it Matters [05 Jul 2008|10:42pm]

[ music | Van Morrison - And It Stoned Me ]

Quickly now, AnthroCon was a very fun convention. It was also the first convention I can recall in the history of doing these things that I got reasonable amount of sleep and didn't feel like a complete zombie on Sunday. It was good to do some socializing, see some old friends, try some local brews and all that good stuff. The real cause for celebrating was not only the release of Dog's Days, but the fact it sold out of all copies on Friday. We were really not expecting that and were quite surprised at the end of the day when the Sofawolf fellows told us (and we felt a little silly we hadn't snagged some copies for friends/family who wanted them, so they will have to wait for the second run.)

After AC we made our way back west to [info]foxfeather and [info]mbala's, who are kind enough to be putting up with our shenanigans. We attempted a canoe trip but the river fell victim to a semi full of ethanol that rolled off the highway into the water. While boating on a flaming river really would be quite the story, the local police caught us as we tried to slip by and instead, we consoled ourselves drinking at the local pub, as some Amish fellow gave us buy one drink, get one free coupons. The local brew was rather lewd, with a phallic tap and the title of "Throbbing Red" but it was light and crisp and went along well with the perfect weather and company.

Fox keeps feeding us amazing food and with every meal I'm afraid it will be harder to get rid of us. Oh, woe to those who feed the scavengers. >;]

For the forth of July, Fox, Mbala, Ket and I went north a bit to visit Brer and Alopex ([info]brerandalopex), who put on quite the BBQ. We let all of our mutts (two huskies, two mutts, an Afghan and a shiba inu) romp it out in the yard while we drank sangria, lemonade and beer and feasted on meat. At dusk, we walked all the dogs to a local park and watched the fireworks display (well, to be fair, about five fireworks displays from local 'burbs.) The smell of cut grass and fireworks, silhouettes of people against the smokey sky waving sparklers and the cool evening air after a warm day was like stepping into a fuzzy childhood memory. We walked back through the dark and the fireflies, met a surreal old woman who appeared from the haze and complimented our troupe of four legged beasties, and it all couldn't have been better. :]

I've also been harassing the local redwing blackbirds.

S'more Photos of the So-Far Summer )

We're staying in Minnesota for a few more days before we begin the trek home. We were throwing around a few ideas for routes and haven't quite settled on what way to go (west is the general consensus so far) but we shall see!

This is a strange thing I noticed.
Here in Detroit I see a lot of women carrying fancy purses with the Cadililac logo on them. Yet the cars they drive are allways beat up Fords. Rusted out Chevys..etc..etc..

EDIT:
- [Dark Riders] looks good. :O
- WoTLK beta signup is up.

1. Politics:
- Obama gives a speech on patriotism, which is very inspiring up until you realize he's wearing the flag lapel pin. :(
- [Singapore's media should not take sides]: PM Lee's press secretary. ;o. (It's a tabloid!!)

2. [Looking Kindly on Vigilante Justice]: I cannot agree with vigilante justice. The legal system is in place to ensure a relatively proportionate and controlled retaliation for crime. You'll meet most people today who'll agree that chopping off someone's hands for burglary (as per middle ages) is barbaric: so how would they define shooting someone to death for burglary? In any case, it's as much a gun lobby Castle rule (I like it termed "Make My Day" rule more) as it is unchangeable, I suppose. (and hey, it wasn't HIS castle but his neighbor's, so he didn't even have reasonable fear...?)

"I'm going to kill them."

(and people think Grand Theft Auto IV and related games are the source of violence! Pick on a less politically difficult target please, legislators).

3. Watched Hancock. It was lame. However, I love watching movies like these (superhero, Will Smith, special effects, humor), so, I have to admit, even with plot holes large enough to drive a monster truck through, it was NOT as bad as I thought, and I did enjoy it.

spoilers )

4. Things seen in petshops while buying catfood:

wtf )

5. Cat
- I think he gets bored at night by himself when we aren't paying attention to him. :(

6. I have Aus PR. Finally. :o.

On with moar 40K: Eldrad Ulthuan is a huge dick... [05 Jul 2008|01:20pm]

sutekhian
[ mood | amused ]

So, Eldrad Ulthran is a dick. It seems shocking to hear and I know he is the guiding light of our people, but in all honestly, he's a total dick.

I know this because I served with him. You see, I am a Warlock. You can imagine my excitement when I was first assigned to his retinue. I took no heed to the fact his last set of Warlocks supposedly died in "a most ironic manner". I was young back then, only 19 000, and naive.

As soon as I met Eldrad in person he gave me my first order: "find a howling banshee exarch, and a witch blade for yourself, we are going to Setrus Prime (as the monkeigh called it)." He actually said the parenthesis by leaning forward and placing a hand beside his mouth to direct his voice to me alone. He is kind of a douche that way, we were in the room alone.

Anyway, Eldrad, the banshee exarch and I sortie to the planet's surface. I project some illusionary cover to shield our hiding spot and the exarch and I await more orders. Before us a great battle is being waged between a force of the monkeigh Space Marines and our fallen brethren, the Dark Eldar. About 20 minutes into the battle Eldrad points to a pebble by his foot and says "Move this small stone to where I am pointing now." He points to an innocuous patch of ground. Dumbfounded but trusting, I do as he says. No sooner had I reached cover did a Space Marine bike roar past me, straight over the pebble. The mighty treads of the bike's wheels fling the pebble up into an empty stretch of air. It hangs there for a moment, then a Dark Eldar reaver rushes into it, the pebble sucked into its jet intake. The reaver sputters then bursts into flames, accelerating rapidly, right into a Talos. The Talos was not of regular design, not that any ever are. This one was a mass of spinning blades with a screaming humanoid in its center, the body of which was too mutilated to even identify its race.

I might mention at this point that Eldrad has not turned to look at the ensuing chaos, instead he is staring in the direction of myself and our howling banshee companion.

When the reaver hit the talos, all hell broke loose as the twirling saws of the unsavory machine broke free like angry daemons being exorcised. I saw one blade, bouncing and racing directly towards us at ludicrous speeds. And I am an Eldar, I know speed. I brace my witch blade for the impact readying myself to take the blow, to save the farseer in my protection. The blades hit and both the saw and the witch blade veer off directly towards the banshee exarch. Both blades merely graze her, just deep enough to cut the restraints that hold her costume on. As her armour falls away exposing her breasts, I realize why Eldrad was staring at her. He giggles, then orders a full retreat.

What a dick.

Kharn the Betrayer - Pretty fun guy to be around... [05 Jul 2008|10:45am]

sutekhian
[ mood | amused ]

The second time I crossed paths with Kharn was in a later stage in the campaign. We were besieging one of the major hives of the planet, and I tell you what that place was locked up tighter than a Dark Eldar's pants. My commander, Oxlor the Vilest was stuck in an argument with some idiot leader of some group of Death Guard. You could see the smell it was so bad. I could tell Oxlor wasn't happy, since everyone knows the Death Guard's answer to everything is to just walk at it and watch your bits fly off. Not so good for us soft and squishy guys.

Out of nowhere, this big hand grabs our commander by the shoulder and just hefts him aside, three whole trenches back where he rebounds off a basilisk. The crew was so shocked they fired off a round on a horrible trajectory, and the shell streaked high into the sky.

Kharn the Betrayer just dusts himself down, and then picks back up what he had been holding. Now, I'm no techpriest and I never will be, but I know a nuclear warhead when I see it. I don't know where he got it.

No one says anything, so The Betrayer just punches the Plague marine in the face, and stuffs the warhead into the leaking mess of his stomach while he was still reeling.

No run up, no preparation. He just ****ing throws the other marine into the air at the hive. For a moment it actually looks like he's thrown the warp-damned fool OVER the hive, but as he flies over the top the basilisk shell comes down and spears him through the whole hive! There's a low boom noise, the ground shakes, and then the whole hive IMPLODES!

Everything clears, and Kharn looks at me, and I feel about one foot tall. I don't know if he recognised me, but he leans down and whispers. Kharn WHISPERS to me.

"I was trying to hit the Emperor's Children on the other side" he confides in me, and then nudges me as though it's supposed to be our little secret.

I was in traction for a MONTH.

In my life, there has only been one other time where a bath has felt better then the one I just took, and that was the bath after getting the cast off my leg when I had surgery on my ankle in '06.
This one easily ranks a second....I think I sat there and stewed for 45 minutes. My next shift is 9PM - 1AM tomorr....today. I can sleep in....WEEEEE!

Okay, Boulder. Fine. Sitting on the mountain and watching the fireworks from five different cities with friends was pretty cool. The breeze was nice, the fruit was delicious, the people were funny, and some guy yelled, "Hitler sucks!" We followed that up with raucous laughter and similar shouts of "AMERICA RULES!" and "HITLER HATES FREEDOM!" I had a wonderful time. Even the crappy fireworks show was nice to shout at.

That's all, really. Not feeling eloquent at the moment, due to having only two hours of sleep last night and working an eight hour shift this morning. Just wanted to say I was pretty happy today.

On Mathematical Exercises [05 Jul 2008|12:34am]

For my amusement, I have calculated the following:

Assuming an equal turnout in each state of the population 18+, a candidate could capture the White House with 21.8% of the popular vote in a two-way race.

I do not have a problem with the Electoral College, but I do protest the disproportionate influence of smaller states. The fifteen smallest states comprise 5% of the US population, but control 10% of the Electoral College.

Note that DC is considered a state for the above purposes.

On Mistaken Anniversiaries [04 Jul 2008|11:27pm]

[ mood | full ]

The second day of July, 1776, will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forevermore.

-John Adams, July 3rd, 1776

Still, despite our current holiday being off by a couple of days, it was a fine day for a cookout, homemade ice cream, and a fire. And zombies.
